Here’s What Your Brain Really Wants More Than Coffee
We’ve all been there – the midday crash -- when your energy tanks and you find yourself craving a jolt. Your mind habitually wants to grab a coffee or something chocolate, but when the stimulating effects wear off, coffee ultimately leaves you craving more sweets to get through the day. Making these poor health choices day-in and day-out can take a toll on your health.
Coffee Drinking Is Not Healthy
According to the National Coffee Drinking Trends 2016, National Coffee Association, 56.5% of Americans over the age of 18 drink coffee every day. But despite the hype and despite the studies saying that coffee is good for your health, the benefits are minute. While the bean may have some benefits, coffee is an addicting, dehydrating, intestinal irritant that leaves you depleted with bad breath and headaches if you don’t drink it every day.
Your Brain Doesn’t Want Fat and Protein Either
Like coffee, protein and fat are also non-essentials for brain health. With so many focused on getting enough protein and fat in the diet, when it comes to brain health the brain loses out on what it needs to function optimally when high amounts of these foods are eaten. Because the brain is starved for what it needs, this is where you begin to experience cravings for sugar.
Of all the organs in your body, your brain uses the most energy. This is why it is vitally important to get your brain the proper fuel it needs to function. The fuel required by the brain and the nervous system is primarily glucose. When you’re feeling low and your thought process begins to slow midday, it is not caffeine that your brain and body require. Coffee and especially any type of refined sugar is not the correct form of sugar for the brain – your brain requires sugar from fruit and plenty of it.

Your Brain Needs Mineral Salts Too
Another thing your body requires is mineral salts. These salts help strengthen the electrical impulses of the brain and heart. Mineral salts come from plant-based foods such as fruit, particularly cucumber and tomato, and they come from herbs like celery and green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and lettuce. Eating plenty of these plant-based foods and even juicing them will give your brain what it needs to run full throttle.
Refined Sugars Are A No-No
According to a report from Harvard Medical School, diets high in refined sugars, for example, are harmful to the brain. Multiple studies have found a correlation between a diet high in refined sugars and impaired brain function — and even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders, such as depression.
The brain requires continual nourishment in the form of a high carbohydrate, low fat, plant-based diet to function optimally.A recent study, published online in Neurology, found that eating a plant-based diet is the best way to preserve memory and mental sharpness. The study followed around 28,000 adults aged 55 and older from 40 different countries. Researchers rated the participants’ diets over a five year period, giving higher points for consuming fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and lower points for red meat and processed foods.
Results showed that the healthier eaters were 24% less likely to have cognitive decline (memory loss, reasoning ability); those with the worst diets were most likely to have cognitive decline.
Coffee Is Only Borrowed Energy
The brain will take what it can get when there’s a craving, but it doesn’t mean this is the correct fuel the brain needs to function optimally. Coffee is stimulant that will help your brain function temporarily -- and then it will crash. While coffee doused with milk and sugar will certainly give your brain the quick jolt you think it needs, this is simply borrowed energy and is not contributing to your brain’s optimal functioning and health.
