If you are afraid to walk under a ladder today or are feeling rather suspicious on Friday the 13th fear not you have friggatriskaidekaphobia, fear of Friday the 13th and you’re not alone. So many people have this phobia that psychiatry gave it an actual name.

Friggatriskaidekaphobia may sound made up but it is real and according to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in North Carolina, Friggatriskaidekaphobia costs Americans up to 800 million dollars from lost of work associated with the fear of Friday the 13th.

Many people are afraid to leave their home therefore, people will not go out and spend money such as going to stores and purchasing food and other items. To complicate the matter, many refuse to go on trips costing the airlines millions because of this phobia.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, a phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of a person, place, or thing and it has no basis in reality. The fear of Friday the 13th is no exception. In fact, believe it or not, it estimated that 25 million American suffer from this fear and will change their habits and practices on this day because this phobia creates a sense of endangerment or a fear of harm.

Researchers have been studying this phobia and have found that there are conflicting studies about the risk of accidents on Friday the 13th. Much research shows that fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft occur less than other Fridays because so many people are more careful on that date.

Other studies such as the study from The British Medical Journal published a research article on hospitalizations occurring from traffic accidents on Friday the 6th and Friday the 13th and found that the hospitalizations were up by 53 percent on 13th. However, if people believe something bad will happen on Friday the 13th, they suffer from anxiety and this affects their judgment and increases their chances of having an accident by 52%!
