Vitamin C Can Naturally Help Cardiovascular Diseases
Research has proven that vitamin C is invaluable in the prevention and treatment of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. James Enstrom from the University of California studied the vitamin intake of over 1,000 people for 10 years. He found that 300mg of vitamin C a day reduced risk of heart disease by 50 percent in men and 40 percent in women. The test also revealed that a higher intake of vitamin C boosted life expectancy by 6 years. He also found that people taking 1,500mg of vitamin C a day for 12 months reversed plaque while those who didn’t take vitamin C had worsening plaque.
In 2008 the University of California, Berkeley, adds to the evidence that vitamin C supplements can lower concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), a central biomarker of inflammation that has been shown to be a powerful predictor of heart disease and diabetes.
Days after the Berkly study, an eight-year clinical trial led by researchers at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital failed to show that vitamins C or E could cut the risk of heart attacks or strokes.
It appears that vitamin C increases the production of collagen, elastin and other “reinforcement molecules” which support your blood vessels and more collagen means more stability for your 60,000-mile-long system of arteries, veins and capillaries.
"This finding of an effect of vitamin C is important because it shows in a carefully conducted randomized, controlled trial that for people with moderately elevated levels of inflammation, vitamin C may be able to reduce CRP as much as statins have done in other studies," said Gladys Block, UC Berkeley professor.
People may want to choose to take a vitamin C supplement several times daily and doctors suggest this is a good idea, hwoever, keep in mind large amounts of f vitamin C can be found in fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, lemons, limes, papaya, strawberries and cantaloupe. Many vegetables are high in vitamin C including tomatoes, broccoli, green and red bell peppers, raw lettuce and other leafy greens.
What is important to remember is that more and more research and clinical trials are being done of the effects of vitamin C and cardiovascular diseases and the results are pointing to taking your C’s daily for strong cardiac care.
