There is no work for many today, and school is out and chances are you are either out of town, and some sort of social event today. Here are some helpful tips that may help you enjoy your while ensuring more fun and safety.

You or someone you know will be lighting up that grill today and do a BBQ. Be sure if you are to follow a few helpful tips says Jason Viscount, executive chef at Harrisburg's Bricco Restaurant. "You want to make sure there's no gas leaks. The other thing is you want to check the burners out. Make sure you have an even flame throughout the burners. Cobwebs and bugs can crawl in over the winter, so you want to make sure nothing is blocking the flame from coming up.” He also states that if you have trouble lighting the grill and you smell heavy gas, turn it off and walk away. Come back five minutes later and try again.

If you use a charcoal grill remember that charcoal produces CO fumes until the charcoal is completely extinguished, do not store the grill indoors with freshly used coals. In addition, keep children away from the odor and the flames for their safety and your peace of mind.

Holidays are about food and enjoying them so do not become one of the millions of people who get sick each year from food-borne illness. Be sure to wash your hands after touching raw meat. This ensures food safety. Food needs to be cooked to a certain temperature to kill harmful bacteria. Hamburger and ground meats should be at least 160 degrees F; chicken breasts, 170 degrees. Keep in mind that hot foods should stay hot and cold foods should stay cold. Bacteria multiply quickly in foods in hot weather. Eat food from the grill right away or quickly store it in an insulated cooler; don't let it cool down first.

Keep cold food such as lunch meat, cooked meats, chicken, and foods with mayo such as coleslaw, potato and macaroni salads in a cooler packed with ice or gel packs to keep it chilled.

Swimming is always a fun way to start off the summer and certain tips should be followed. Be sure to keeps kids safe by giving them constant supervision around water. Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone. By all means know what to do in an emergency and be sure you know CPR.

Finally if you plan on drinking, then please don’t drive. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration state that 40 percent of total traffic deaths are due to drunk driving. If you plan on drinking, be sure to have a designated driver with you.
