Why You Should Get Vaccinated This Flu Season

It's almost winter and scientists are working hard on improving this season's flu vaccine.

CDC Director Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, says that every year children die from the flu. In fact, approximately 20,000 children under 5 years old are hospitalized annually because of the flu. At worst, the flu kills about 50,000 Americans in one year. He says that flu vaccines significantly lower your chances of getting the flu.

The good news is that scientists have announced this year's vaccine is more compatible with the popular flu strains going around. Last year the vaccine wasn't as effective, which made people not want to get vaccinated. But this year 75 percent of children have already been vaccinated, which is over and beyond the percentage health officials expected.

Believe it or not, healthcare providers get sick too. It's easy to believe that doctors and nurses cure people and can't get ill. But the reason why they seem so strong and immune to diseases they're frequently in contact with is because they stay up-to-date with their vaccinations. In fact, almost 80 percent of healthcare workers were flu vaccinated in 2015.

But dental healthcare personnel are another story. Only 31.6 percent of people working in a dental setting get a flu vaccine. Dr. Maxwell Johnson of Oracle Family Dental says that spending individualized time is important in nurturing a good dentist-patient relationship, which helps lower patients' anxieties about going to the dentist. He says, “We have to spend more time with our patients with only inches between us, that's why it's especially imperative that dental care providers get vaccinated.”

This flu season make sure your children are vaccinated for the flu. It's better to be safe than sorry. You won't most likely die from the flu, so you can also opt for keeping your immune system in top shape by eating immunity-boosting foods, like those rich in vitamin C.
