Selena Gomez Lost 20 Pounds in 3 Weeks After Controversial Weight Gain - Here’s How She Did It!
Selena Gomez was ridiculed on social media for her weight gain, but she took the criticism head on and lost 20 pounds using this regimen.
Selena Gomez has been an American sweetheart since appearing on Barney and Friends in 2002 when she was just 10 years old. Since then, she has been wowing the world with her amazing singing and acting talents. Her latest solo album, Revival, has even gone gold in the United States.
Whether loved for her music, her movie roles, or even her characters on the Disney Channel, there is no denying that Selena Gomez has become quite a pop and fashion icon. Beautiful, slim and self-confident, it’s no wonder she’s been rated the 64th sexiest woman alive by FHM!
However, recently she received some criticism over social media for her recent weight gain.
The Controversial Weight Gain
The controversy started in April of 2015 when pictures were published of her enjoying herself in Mexico. According to Hollywood Life, her weight gain while in Mexico received insults and verbal abuse on social media. One specific Instagram user, laurenvb094, commented on one of Selena’s pictures, stating, “@selenagomez you need to work out! Please stop eating junk food!” Laurenvb094 continued the bashing by stating:
“She is not curvy at all…..she’s an actress she needs to tone her body, in the business sadly the image its important i’m just saying that she needs to work thats nothing wrong with that.”
Ms. Gomez was not having any of the body bashing. She even responded to laurenvb094, saying:
“You’re disgusting. IM IN the business and I could care less about what ‘they’ or you say I should look like. I don’t need to do anything other than love myself, take care of my work, fans, family and friends… And I do work out. It’s not your place to tell anyone what they should or should not do.”
The Truth Behind Her Weight Gain
In October of 2015, Selena Gomez appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where she revealed that she was battling an autoimmune condition called lupus. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disorder that can damage any part of the body.
According to Entertainment Online, Selena had actually been diagnosed with the condition in 2013. She had been trying to keep the diagnosis a secret, but with the slanderous comments about her weight gain, she decided to raise awareness of the effects of lupus.
With lupus, the human body does not know the difference between necessary proteins in the body or foreign invaders. Because of this, antibodies that should only be attacking viruses and germs end up attacking the entire body. This results in skin and organ damage, inflammation and chronic pain.
Her weight gain was due to the medications she was taking for her condition. One of the medications that helps to relieve the inflammation, prednisone, not only causes the person taking it to feel much hungrier but also makes the body store increased amounts of fat in the face, the neck, and the stomach.
The Dramatic Weight Loss
Ms. Gomez has never looked better. Earlier this year, the young pop star decided to focus on herself and not let the lupus take control of her life or her body. In fact, she lost an impressive 20 pounds in just 3 weeks!
Was it a magic pill? Was it hours and hours of cardio exercise and barely eating anything at all? No! According to her trainer, Amy Rosoff Davis, it was a combination of discipline and improved eating habits.
So How Did Selena Gomez Lose Weight?
1. She Followed The 80/20 Rule
Neither her trainer nor her nutritionist, Lisa C. Cohen of Park Avenue Nutrition, encouraged her to follow a strict diet. Instead, Selena (a huge junk-food and candy fan) ate whole nutritious foods 80 percent of the time and ate her favorite foods 20 percent of the time. This helped her to not only control her cravings through her weight loss journey, but also helped her stick with her goals as she didn’t feel deprived.
According to Cosmopolitan, Amy encourage her to live her life “like a French person.”
"I don't believe in denying yourself, but I also believe in moderation. Life is too short not to enjoy food."
2. She Never Followed the Same Exercise Routine
Research has shown that changing up your workout routine frequently can actually help you lose more weight. If you follow the same routine every day, your body and brain become used to it. That’s why the exercise eventually gets easier.
Selena’s trainer encourage her to switch up her routine on a consistent basis, making each and every workout a challenge. Selena did cardio, yoga, Pilates, hiking, running and strength training. The constant changing of workouts also helped the "Hands To Myself" singer keep with her weight loss plan.
“Basically, I wanted to mix things up because I get bored easily. I just try to keep it fresh,” she told PopSugar. “I love how Pilates makes me feel, like it opens me up.”
3. She Drank A LOT Of Water
Selena’s trainer made it a point to have her drink tons of water. Why? Research has shown that drinking more water can actually help you lose weight. Scientists are still unsure about whether it’s because of the fact that it fills you up more, helping to curb cravings or because it helps to speed up your metabolism. Regardless of the method, research shows heavy water drinkers lose more weight.
“I always have water, tons of water,” Selena told Vogue. “It’s even in my bathroom because I used to be so bad at drinking water and I want to stay hydrated.”
4. She Juiced
Ms. Gomez keeps a juice machine in her dressing room so she can have an all-natural freshly made juice right before she goes on stage to perform. Although she admits that she’s not too fond of it, her trainer, Amy forces her to do it. Want to know her go-to juice recipe? It’s a mix of carrot, ginger, kale and cucumber.
5. She Maintained A Positive Body Image
Despite the nasty comments on her weight gain, for whatever the reason, Selena never let the haters break her. Her weight loss was not to hush the comments, but was for herself. She wanted to have energy and feel her best for her upcoming Revival tour. And as recent images from her Instagram have shown us, Selena is working it.
