Why Banana Water Could Be Appealing

banana water

The marketplace is brimming with a variety of plant waters, but that hasn’t stopped a new one from slipping into view. Are you prepared to raise a glass to banana water?

Is banana water appealing?
Although bananas are not a juicy fruit, some enterprising individuals formulated a beverage containing banana juice concentrate, added a few nutrients, and announced you no longer need to peel your banana to enjoy the fruit. The brand currently on the market is Elmhurst Naturals (made by Steuben Foods), but keep your eyes peeled for others that may crop up as time goes on.

If you like bananas and wouldn’t mind foregoing the peeling process, then banana water may be a type of plant water you want to consider. All you weight-conscious readers should be forewarned, however, that just because it’s called water doesn’t mean it’s calorie free—it’s not.

Note: Infused water, on the other hand, such as apple cinnamon water you can make at home, are free of calories. While drinking plain water for weight loss can be boring, infused water is not!

About banana water

Each 12 ounce bottle of banana water contains 70 calories as well as 13 to 14 grams of sugar and 15 to 16 grams of carbohydrates. The range in sugar and carb grams reflects the fact there are three banana water flavors available: original, mango, and passion fruit.

The Elmhurst Naturals boast the presence of 850 milligrams of potassium in each 12-ounce bottle, which is about the amount of the mineral you can get from eating two medium-sized bananas. However, if you are drinking banana water so you can get a shot of potassium, you could do much better with numerous other foods.

For example, 1 cup of cooked spinach provides 839 mg of potassium as well as incredible amounts of vitamins A, B, C, and K as well as many minerals, all for a mere 41 calories. Acorn squash and mushrooms are other low-calorie potassium powerhouses.

If you are looking for an alternative to other plant waters, say, coconut water, then Steuben Foods believes they have a winner. The manufacturer claims the banana water “is lighter and fresher than coconut water.” Naturally, you need to be the judge of that statement.

Elmhurst Naturals also adds potassium citrate, magnesium citrate, and ascorbic acid (a form of vitamin C) to the basic recipe of water, banana juice concentrate, and natural banana flavor, but no added sugar.

Banana or banana water?

Would you be better off eating bananas rather than drinking them? One medium banana provides about 105 calories and 27 g of carbs, both of which exceed the values found in one serving of banana water.

In addition to 422 mg of potassium and 32 mg of magnesium, eating a banana gives you 3.1 g of fiber, 1 g of protein, 22 percent of your Daily Value of vitamin B6, and 16 percent of manganese. Do you need to choose between a real banana and banana water?

For banana lovers, there is a place for both in your diet. However, if you are watching your weight, it’s recommended you be aware of the calories you consume in beverages, as they can add up quickly and sabotage your weight loss efforts.
