For the third year in a row, the Pound For Pound Challenge is asking Americans to lose weight and pledge their weight loss to help feed the hungry. Partners in the Pound For Pound Challenge include “The Biggest Loser: Couples,” General Mills, SUBWAY®, and Feeding America.

Pound For Pound Challenge helps stock food banks

Food banks across the United States have been experiencing short falls due to the persistent downturn in the economy and the growing number of people who need their services. According to Feeding America, a network of more than 200 food banks across the nation, more than 49 million people do not have dependable, consistent access to enough food due to limited money and resources.

To help stock food bank shelves, the goal of the Challenge is to obtain up to 9.4 million pounds of food. For every pound Americans pledge to lose, Pound For Pound Challenge will donate 11 cents to Feeding America, up to a maximum of $1.4 million. While 11 cents may not sound like much, it is enough to get one pound of food on behalf of a local food bank.

As of Sunday January 9, 2011, more than 37,000 people had pledged to lose pounds on the Pound For Pound Challenge website. The total number of pounds pledged had topped 1 million. The District of Columbia was leading in the state rankings, while Gassaway, West Virginia was leading in the city category.

Several new features are part of the Challenge this year. Because “The Biggest Loser” is following a “Couples” format, teams can compete in the Challenge this year. Participants can also enter the Challenge by pledging to maintain their current weight for a contribution that is equal to a loss of five pounds.

Everyone who pledges will be matched with a Feeding America food bank that is near where they live. The number of pounds to lose will be tracked and ranked by individual city and state, and updates will be provided on “The Biggest Loser: Couples” throughout the show’s 11th season.

Alison Sweeney, host of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser: Couples” noted that “I love this program because it inspires people to fight the hunger crisis by improving their own health.” The Pound For Pound Challenge may be based on losing weight, but those who participate in it are winners, and so are the food banks.
