Low testosterone

Although a lot of attention is given to female menopause, you rarely hear discussions about male menopause. Unfortunately, it is a real problem for men. Male menopause, also known as andropause, leads to a drop in testosterone levels. In addition to being an annoyance, having low testosterone levels is not good for your health. This is why it is important that men become more educated on the effects of low testosterone in an effort to remain healthy.

Importance of testosterone

Testosterone is one of the most important male hormones. Although people often talk about it in the context of strength and libido, testosterone also plays a vital role in dozens of other areas. According to fitness and nutrition expert Ric Drasin, hormones are the body’s chemical messengers.

“They travel throughout the bloodstream to specific tissues and organs, where they work at varying speeds, inducing many different physiological processes central to which are: growth and development; metabolism; sexual functions; reproduction; and mood,” says Ric Drasin.

Males begin to produce testosterone within a few weeks of conception. These testosterone levels increase significantly during puberty and peak during the late teen years. Testosterone levels even out for a few years before tapering off around the age of 30. Then, the average man’s testosterone levels gradually decrease.

Effects of low testosterone

The symptoms of low testosterone are different for every individual, but the following problems are commonly reported:

Erectile dysfunction. If you watch television, you will probably see a commercial about an erectile dysfunction (ED) drug or treatment at some point during the day or night. This is because this problem is common for many men with low testosterone levels.

Lack of motivation. Testosterone plays an important role in the central nervous system, so low levels directly impact a man’s confidence, motivation and concentration. This can result in depression and reclusiveness.

Loss of strength. Testosterone is one of the primary factors involved in the growth and development of muscle and bone strength. As a man’s testosterone levels diminish, he is more likely to suffer broken bones, fractures and a loss of muscle mass.

Loss of hair. Testosterone promotes the growth of hair on a man’s face, chest, armpits and genitals. As testosterone levels dwindle, many men begin losing body hair. It may also lead to premature balding, but family history plays a bigger role in this process.

Testosterone plays a major role in men’s bodies. From motivation to hair growth, this vital male hormone is important for a number of distinct yet interconnected reasons.

Hormone replacement therapy

Is all hope lost once a man’s testosterone levels begin tapering off? The answer is not exactly. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is an option for many men who are struggling with the negative symptoms and side effects. This therapy works by replacing deficient hormones with chemically identical ones that can help a man achieve the proper balance.

However, as Ric Drasin points out, you should not rush into HRT without carefully considering all of your options. “The uniqueness of each person makes it incumbent upon health care professionals and patients to work together to customize hormone therapy,” he writes. “Through this cooperation, hormones can be compounded in the required strengths and dosages, and administered via the most appropriate preparation to best meet each individual’s needs.”

Stay aware of your health

If you are a man in your 30s, 40s or 50s, it is important that you think about testosterone and the impact low levels have on your mind and body. The effects of low testosterone are far more significant than low libido. Many of the side effects and symptoms can directly impact your physical and mental health. If you suspect you are dealing with a testosterone deficiency, schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor and find out what can be changed.
