Ground beef recall process gets updated by USDA

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has updated the ground beef recall process to make detection and removal faster. The changes will allow the agency to speed up the process of getting rid of contaminated products from stores. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will be allowed to test beef faster in order to find the source of the problem.

New rules for recalling ground beef

The USDA’s statement reveals that the goal of the new rules is to find and eliminate contaminated products quickly. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been working on various ways to improve the recall system and has focused on ground beef at this time. The agency has warned consumers might see a spike in recalls after the new rules are set in place.

One of the changes will allow the Food Safety and Inspection Service to start testing potentially contaminated meat immediately instead of waiting for other tests to come back. This will cut down on the time the agency spends waiting for results and could help remove bad products from stores faster. Another potential change would force stores to keep better records of their suppliers.

Recalls and protecting consumers

A recent recall of ground beef and other products from Gateway Meat Market provides an example of how frequently consumers face dangers in grocery stores. The company started the recall because of potential metal contamination within the products, and some of the ground beef from Gateway Meat Market could have had metal filings in it. Although contamination with plastic, metal or other materials occurs, it is not the most common reason for a recall. In general, many ground beef recalls occur because of E. coli being found after testing. Consumers are advised to pay attention to recalls and immediately get rid of the listed products.
