Gluten sensor would help control celiac disease
A company in San Francisco is working on a gluten sensor that will help people who suffer from celiac disease. A gluten-free diet is an essential part of treatment, but it is not easy to avoid cross-contamination or coming into contact with the protein. 6SensorLabs hopes to change this by creating a product that will automatically detect gluten.
Most people with celiac disease are on a gluten-free diet, and the challenges of avoiding the protein appear on a daily basis. Contamination can occur in any location, and even some products labeled as gluten-free may be produced in a facility that has wheat, barley or other products considered unsafe. Although there are apps to help people avoid the protein, they often depend on barcodes and product labels. A sensor would allow you to test any type of food without the need for a barcode.
The gluten sensor is still in the development stages, but 6SensorLabs has a waiting list available for people who would like to be notified about the product. There are images of a prototype on their website that reveal it is portable and lightweight, so it could fit into a purse. This means someone with celiac disease can easily take the sensor to a restaurant or on a trip.
The company promises that the gluten sensor will let you test any type of food for the protein and get quick results. It will also allow you to save and share the data for future reference. 6SensorLabs wants to take this information to create a database of gluten-free food and restaurants. It recently received $4 million in funding to make the sensor a reality, so the development process is making progress. Shireen Yates and Scott Sundvor want the product to change how people deal with food allergies by making their lives easier.
