Easy mac and cheese recipe that is gluten-free and dairy-free
Mac and cheese is a childhood favorite for many people and a beloved comfort food. You can still eat it on the gluten-free and dairy-free diet with the following recipe.
Whether you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, reaching for a box of mac and cheese from the store is not an option unless it is gluten-free (GF). Things get more complicated if you have to follow both a dairy-free (DF) and gluten-free diet at the same time. Many of the GF prepackaged mac and cheese products contain milk. However, the following recipe is GF and DF, yet it still tastes delicious.
Easy mac and cheese recipe
Avoiding gluten is an essential part of the GF diet for celiac disease or gluten intolerance. If you are concerned about cross-contamination with gluten, then cooking at home is a safer option. This mac and cheese recipe is easy to follow and does not require an enormous amount of ingredients.
What type of pasta should you use?
You need gluten-free and dairy-free paste for this recipe. Although you can try GF homemade pasta or try pasta from vegetables, you probably do not have time to make it from scratch every night. Fortunately, there are gluten-free pastas you can purchase online or in stores.
Opinions vary about the best GF pasta to use for mac and cheese. However, the GF elbow macaroni made by Barilla, Ronzoni, Tinkyada and Hodgson Mill tends to get positive reviews. You may want to experiment with several brands to find your family’s favorite.

Tips for making your own mac and cheese
This recipe can be modified with extra herbs or spices if you prefer to have them in your mac and cheese. Paprika, mustard, turmeric and chili powder are popular options. In addition, you do not have to use Daiya GF and DF cheese. If there is a different brand of gluten-free and dairy-free cheese that your family prefers, then you can substitute it. However, it is easier to make the sauce by using shredded cheese than whole slices because it melts faster. You can also bake the mac and cheese in an oven to make it crunchy and crispy.
