Celiac disease sausage recall

Homestyle Meats is recalling several types of its sausages because of undeclared wheat. The company shares that the label mistakenly did not include wheat as one of the ingredients. If you have celiac disease or are sensitive to gluten, you should not consume these products.

Homestyle Meats is recalling both fresh and frozen varieties of two sausages. The Farmers Sausage and the Garlic Sausage are not labeled correctly and are missing the wheat ingredient. They were sold in packages of three sausages, and the company mentions that all the codes on these two varieties that are mislabeled are affected.

For now, the recall is limited to Canada and has not spread to other countries. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency considers this a Class 3 recall. Homestyle Meats has not issued a statement at this time, but it is cooperating with the agency. There is limited information about the company, but it is listed as a provider of meat products for retail locations in Saskatchewan.

Recalls for undeclared allergens can occur for a variety of reasons including simple production errors to more serious labeling issues. Although Homestyle Meats has not clarified why wheat was missing from the labels, there are several possibilities that can explain how it occurred. Labels may have been misprinted, or the recipes may have been updated recently, and changes were not included. In addition, it is possible a distributor who provides one of the ingredients, such as a spice, has discovered wheat and notified the company. If you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, you should not eat the Farmers Sausage and the Garlic Sausage from Homestyle Meats.
