Pet Waste

While the debate around what to do with Fido's doo takes place in Toronto, it doesn't affect the organics collection process in Niagara.

"Pet waste is not permitted in Niagara's green organics bin," said Barry Friesen, director of Waste Management Services.

Niagara was the first regional municipality to implement a large-scale collection of organics. At that time, the decision not to include pet waste in the Green Bin Program was made because of the added requirements involved to process it at our facility. "We are currently undergoing an Request For Proposal process for a new organics processing technology and will be re-launching the Green Bin Program within the next year," said Friesen.

The Region has a mandate to continue to evaluate trends and technologies and is currently undertaking a service level review study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate current services and determine future services with the goal of diverting at least 65 per cent of waste from landfills by 2012.
