Palm oil, coconut oil, and antioxidant supplements have fallen to the bottom of the list of suggested foods.
Nutrition researcher Neal Barnard, M.D., F.A.C.C., who is the president and founder of the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and his associates reviewed the most recent research dealing with popular food trends to create an evidence-based prescription which provides clinicians with a quick guide to share with patients in a clinical setting. This group of researchers says green leafy vegetables, berries, particularly blueberries and strawberries, and plant proteins such as beans and lentils, are the best foods for support of good cardiovascular function.

Although nuts, canola oil, olive oil, and sunflower oil offer good sources of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, they should nevertheless be consumed in moderation because of their high calorie content. Coconut oil and palm oil are on the list of foods to avoid. Cholesterol in the diet should be kept low. And it has been advised to avoid a Southern dietary pattern which is rich in added fats, eggs, fried foods, organ and processed meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages.
