Physical exercise, and particularly aerobic exercise, has been shown to offer a low cost regimen to counter cognitive decline, including memory, and other cognitive functions, in normally aging adults. Previous studies on aging had a focus primarily on the effects of medium to long term exercise training on brain health. In this study the researchers examined changes which were seen in brain blood flow, cognition, and fitness in cognitively healthy but sedentary adults who were 57–75 years old. These people were placed in a physical training group or a wait-list control group. The results showed that even shorter term aerobic exercise can have positive effects on neuroplasticity and therefore can lower both the biological and cognitive consequences of aging to benefit the brain health of sedentary adults.

"This research shows the tremendous benefit of aerobic exercise on a person’s memory and demonstrates that aerobic exercise can reduce both the biological and cognitive consequences of aging," says Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman, the lead author of the paper and the founder of Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas at Dallas. Therefore, it appears a combination of physical and mental exercise may be the most significant health measures to improve cognitive brain health.

It has been my professional experience that people are intrigued by the possibility of being able to actually improve the basic brain structure of the brain with a healthy lifestyle. The finding that this can in fact be done with aerobic exercise and complex thinking offers us great inspiration to get up and stay in shape at any age.

This finding and the scientific reasoning which backs it up should offer new hope for people who are concerned about potential cognitive decline with aging and people who have been diagnosed with acute or chronic forms of mental illness. It is my professional opinion that because it is actually possible to change brain structure with a healthy lifestyle, which should also of course include good nutrition, it is actually possible to keep a healthy brain in good shape as you age and to cure a sick brain naturally without the toxic side effects of drugs.
