Ambitious students are often searching for the best ways to improve their performance in school. All-nighters with junk food and a lot of coffee and energy drinks generally doesn't work very well at all. It's much wiser for students to stress their overall health and well being and focus on staying fit with good nutrition to do well in school.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln reports the grades of students may be improved by getting in shape and consuming adequate iron. Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Pennsylvania State University did an analysis of 105 young women in college and observed that those who had better grades generally were more fit and had higher iron stores than the other women. These researchers take the position that the difference between getting an A or B really could be based on a student's fitness and iron levels.

In this study at Penn State young women in college who were in shape with good iron levels got higher grade point averages than women who were not fit and who suffered from iron deficiency. The variance in the grade-point average was as high as 0.34 which could make the difference in a letter grade level. Karsten Koehler, who is an assistant professor of nutrition and health sciences at Nebraska, says a very easy measure of success which we can all relate to is GPA.
The impact on school performance is more outstanding when fitness and nutrition are considered together
Iron assists the body with vital functions such as the transport of oxygen in the blood. There is an association between iron deficiency and fatigue along with decreased capacity to work and poor performance in school. General health, cognition and learning are also influenced by being fit physically. Although the impact of fitness was greater overall than the impact of iron status was on school performance, the impact was even more outstanding when these parameters were considered together.
The Journal of Nutrition reports that a primary determinant of future prospects for students is how well they do in school. There has been an association observed between cognition and nutritional and physical factors. Poor iron stores and poor aerobic fitness has been determined to potentially play a role in keeping students from achieving as well as they are capable of achieving in school. Students should be encouraged to stay fit and eat nutritious food. This could be a magic bullet for academic success for many students.
