A happy spouse may be a natural remedy for your good health
According to a study which has been published by the American Psychological Association having a happy spouse may be associated with better health.
The quality of your relationships can have a significant impact on your overall health. The kind of spouse you have can dramatically influence your well being.
The American Psychological Association reports that it could actually be good for your health to have a happy spouse. Researchers say there is an independent association between having a happy partner and better health.
You have a better chance of good health with a happy spouse
The researchers studied 1,981 middle-aged heterosexual couples and determined that there is a much greater likelihood of having better health over the course of time if you have a happy spouse. This association was seen as occurring above and beyond the person’s own individual happiness.
William Chopik, PhD, who is an assistant professor of psychology at Michigan State University and the principal investigator of the study, says assumptions about the association between happiness and health are significantly broadened by this study which suggests a unique social link. It seems that just having a happy partner may improve health as much as striving to be happy yourself.
Chopik wanted to take previous findings that happy people are generally healthy people a step further by investigating
the health effects of interpersonal relationships. He sees several potential reasons why having a happy partner might improve the health of someone.
A happy partner makes life easier
A happy partner is more likely to give better social support such as caretaking in comparison to unhappy partners. Happy partners may also help unhappy people become involved with activities and environments which promote good health, such as eating nutritious food and exercising. Furthermore a person's life should be made easier and happier by being with a happy partner. There is less of a tendency to pursue self-destructive outlets such as using drugs and drinking in such instances due to more satisfaction with one's life.
This study has been published in the journal Health Psychology. This study has explored the influence which a romantic partners’ happiness has on the physical health of their partner. It appears that simply having a partner who is happy may improve your health significantly. A happy partner may really serve as a good natural remedy to nurture good health.
