In many instances a healthy lifestyle can help to significantly lower your blood pressure naturally without drugs. This is good news since medication for blood pressure control is often associated with adverse side effects.

Lifestyle intervention leads to a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure

It has been reported by the American College of Cardiology that lifestyle intervention leads to a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure. In this study participants who took part in web-based lifestyle counseling lowered their systolic blood pressure by 10 mmHg. Those in the web-based control intervention lowered their systolic blood pressure by 6 mmHg.

e-Counseling intervention demonstrated an effect which was similar to taking another blood-pressure-lowering medication

Robert P. Nolan, PhD, the lead author of the study, said that electronic counseling, or e-Counseling, intervention demonstrated an effect which was similar to taking another blood-pressure-lowering medication. Dr. Nolan and his associates believe that lifestyle counseling intervention can serve as a good complement to medical treatment to lower high blood pressure. Lifestyle counseling can actually help to optimize the effectiveness of the medical treatment.

The e-Counseling offered interactive tools to help increase motivation and needed skills to begin and sustain a lifestyle which is heart-healthy. Video clips were used which showed characters talking about being diagnosed with high blood pressure and initiatives to make positive lifestyle changes. Nolan said there was an effort to replicate going through lifestyle counseling face-to-face.

After 12 months aside from an average decrease of 10 mmHg in systolic blood pressure in the e-Counseling group in comparison with 6 mmHg in the control group, there was also a statistically significant average lowering of 4 mmHg in pulse pressure in the e-Counseling group compared to a 1.5 mmHg average reduction in the control group. The e-Counseling participants said they became attached to the characters which they saw in the video clips and this helped to give them motivation to achieve their goals for behavior change.

Cardiology Advisor
reported that internet based counseling on lifestyle lowers hypertension and improves the risk profile for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Lifestyle counseling which combines diet and exercise has been observed to improve cardiovascular outcomes.

e-Counseling offers a dynamic way to engage patients

Dr. Nolan says that it seems that e-Counseling offers a dynamic way to engage patients. He sees this as being a very powerful tool to assist in the promotion of positive behavior changes. This is very exciting in an era wherein people across the world have access to the Internet.

The wide popularity of HealthTap shows that people are catching onto the value of e-Counseling to help promote good health. HealthTap doctors are available 24 hours a day to give patients high quality health care counseling.
