Researchers have discovered acupuncture can be used to lower hypertension.

There has been a great deal of interest in the use of acupuncture as an alternative non-drug treatment for many illnesses. Researchers say acupuncture has great potential for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Hypertension is lowered by acupuncture via activation of opioids

The University of California, Irvine reports that researchers have found hypertension is lowered by acupuncture via activation of opioids . Researchers associated with UCI’s Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine have discovered that regular electroacupunture treatments can decrease hypertension via increasing the release of a type of opioid in the brainstem region which controls blood pressure.

UCI cardiology researcher Zhi-Ling Guo and colleagues noted in tests on rats lower blood pressure lasted for a minimum of three days after electroacupuncture enhanced the gene expression of enkephalins, which is one of the three primary opioid peptides which are produced by the body.

Repetitive electroacupuncture sets off a long-lasting action in decreasing blood pressure

This study offers the first evidence of the molecular activity which is behind the hypertension lowering effects of electroacupunture. The UCI research team has reported that patients who were treated with acupuncture at certain wrist locations had decreases in their blood pressure. In this study it was shown that repetitive electroacupuncture sets off a long-lasting action in decreasing blood pressure. This may therefore be a good treatment for clinical hypertension.

This study has been published in the journal Scientific Reports. About 33 percent of the adult population in the world suffers from hypertension. The consequences of hypertension can be very serious and include strokes and heart attacks. With acupuncture there are few concerns about side effects which are often seen with conventional medical treatment. Acupuncture deserves consideration as a non-pharmacological approach to lower high blood pressure.
