Researchers have said a study on mice has demonstrated the action of strawberries in fighting breast cancer.

The diagnosis of breast cancer is devastating news for afflicted women and their loved ones. Fortunately with aggressive treatment there are many cures. Natural complements to standard surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are generally welcomed.

Researchers have found that women with breast cancer can be helped with social connections. And forest therapy has been shown to benefit treatment of women with breast cancer. Nutritional perspectives are also significant with a diet which is rich in fruit and vegetables associated with a lower risk for getting breast cancer and other types of cancer.

Strawberries may benefit the treatment of breast cancer

Scientists have demonstrated how strawberries may benefit the treatment of breast cancer in a study with mice. Plataforma SINC reports that a study which was done by researchers in Europe and Latin America has demonstrated that strawberry extract can inhibit the spread of breast cancer cells grown in a lab. This has been seen even when the cancer cells are used to induce tumors in mice.

As of this time these results can not be extrapolated to people. However, the findings over hope for the use of strawberries for prevention and treatment of breast cancer in women. For the first time it has been shown that strawberry extract, which is rich in phenolic compounds, inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer cells in both in vitro and in vivo models.

Maurizio Battino, who is co-author of the paper and a principal investigator at the Marche Polytechnic University in Italy and the European University of the Atlantic in Santander in Spain, says the results of this study are definitely valid for gaining an understanding of potential effects of strawberries on breast cancer. However, these findings must be complemented with clinical and epidemiological studies aimed at verifying whether people experience the same positive effects as the researchers have observed in mice.

The concentration of phenolic compounds may vary significantly between different varieties of strawberries

It has been noted that the concentration of phenolic compounds, which are thought to be responsible for the beneficial health effects, may vary significantly between different varieties of strawberries. The researchers have emphasized the potential value of a healthy lifestyle which is characterized, among other considerations, by a balanced diet with a lot of fruit and vegetables, which includes strawberries.

This study has been published by Scientific Reports. In vitro and in vivo biological activity directed against invasive breast cancer cells has been demonstrated with strawberries, which are rich in polyphenols. This suggests that strawberry extracts may serve as an effective preventive and curative food intervention for breast cancer in people. Regularly enjoying delicious and nutritious strawberries which are naturally rich in many vitamins and minerals, along with other fruit and vegetables, is a good habit to get into.
