Dr. Stephen Garret Marcus notes that often, it’s not cancer that kills; it is the complications of cancer. Dr. Marcus, a senior biotechnology research executive, has written a book “for everyone” that describes common complications that become more frequent and severe if cancer progresses or spreads. He notes that spotting them early and treating them quickly can lessen their impact and save lives. He explains, “Patients and their families are the first line of defense; they need to know what to watch for and seek treatment immediately. Many can be successfully treated if they’re addressed at the first signs of trouble.”

In his comprehensive new reference, “Complications of Cancer,” Dr. Marcus describes the symptoms of six common complications:

  • Malignant spinal cord compression: Compression of the spinal cord is caused by a malignant tumor or by bones in the spine damaged by cancer. Symptoms may include pain in the neck or back and weakness in the arms or legs. This is a medical emergency and should be promptly treated, or patients risk paralysis. Cancers of the lung, breast, and prostate, commonly spread to the spine and are the most likely cancers to produce spinal cord compression.
  • Neutropenic sepsis: This condition often occurs during chemotherapy. The most common signs of infection are fever, chills, difficulty breathing, a new persistent cough, a sore throat, or a change in mental clarity. An easy way to lower risk is to keep hands clean. If there is an intravenous access line in place, it is important to keep the area clean.
  • Pulmonary embolism: Symptoms usually include sudden, severe shortness of breath associated with pain in the chest area. Treatment may include supplemental oxygen and blood pressure support, if necessary, and administration of blood thinning “anticoagulant” medications.
  • Bacterial pneumonia: Cancer or treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and steroid medications can diminish a person's ability to prevent the growth of dangerous bacteria in the lungs and increase the risk of pneumonia. Symptoms can include cough, fever and chills. Antibiotics will generally cure pneumonia caused by the most common types of bacteria. If the person also is having severe difficulty breathing or low blood pressure, hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics may be required.
  • Intestinal obstruction: The most common first symptom is bouts of severe pain in the middle of the abdomen. Treatment includes intravenous fluids and along with a tube passed into the stomach to decompress the intestine by withdrawing excess fluid and air. Emergency surgery may be necessary to relieve the obstruction.
  • Delirium, stupor, and coma: The most common causes of these symptoms in people with cancer are problems with blood chemistry, spread of cancer to the brain, side effects of medications and infections. These complications have various treatments after the cause is identified.

Dr. Marcus notes, “Attitude is the great wild card for surviving cancer, both in vigilance for possible complications, and the courage to keep fighting.”

There is the chance that the individual may control efficiently the occurrence and development activity of malign cells. The tumor cells and the disturbances caused by them represent a very complex problem with various unknown elements which make difficult the doctors’ efforts and the patients’ expectancies. All information held by the human being until now about the tumor cells are insufficient in order to sole efficiently the malign affections. To this effect, we have to enlarge the knowledge horizon by new „key” information and I have not renounced and I have made this with all my passion and power – in the research study named „All about the malign cells and their fighting”. Now, the importance of the new discoveries may have a significant impact on our anti-tumor defense. I have not created this work in order to impress somebody. The thing in stake might be even our lives. I wanted that the people be fully aware of the mechanism generating the occurrence and development of malign affections, as well as the main liable agent so that the human being may redirect and adapt its efficient, preventive defense strategy against malignity. It is not easy to carry out such a complex scientific research in an inaccessible field, located beyond the knowledge limits and to succeed revealing some unknown biological mechanism of malign cells and vulnerable „key” points of their behavior which might be selectively attacked. I am not an English speaker, I have no support and the translation and editing costs are large, especially to support and continue the fundamental applicative scientific activity of tumor cells. I am sorry that such new information and solutions cannot reach the audience much more quickly in order to improve, to test them legally and to obtain the copyrights license. While most people is waiting, hoping for years to have something new which may heal them, this new information stays hidden within my papers and documents, having no chance to be known and useful. I am looking for a suggestion and help in order to reveal them to the world, to continue the activity and release one of the four books named „Life beyond all” which includes everything about malign cells and their fighting against(400 pag.). Thank you for your attention and support. Sincerely yours, The author of these works Nicolae Gheorghe E-mail: [email protected]
