Weight loss boarding school starts new semester
In an effort to combat escalating childhood obesity rates, more than 100 kids across the world will begin taking classes this fall at Wellspring Academies, the world’s only year-round boarding schools for overweight teens. The new semester starts Monday, September 1, at the program’s Reedley, Calif. and Brevard, N.C. campuses.
Formerly known as Academy of the Sierras, Wellspring Academies has helped hundreds of students combat obesity and transform their lives using its proven, scientific-based approach to weight loss. Designed specifically for children and young adults ages 11-24, Wellspring’s program combines a low-fat diet, physical activity and cognitive-behavioral therapy to help students lead a healthy lifestyle and achieve long-term weight loss success.
“We are all very excited to enter a new semester this fall,” said Dr. Daniel Kirschenbaum, vice president of Clinical Services at Wellspring and professor of psychiatry & behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Medical School. “Wellspring Academies has among the best documented initial and long-term outcomes of any non-surgical weight loss intervention for any age group. This is one reason why we attract so many students from all over the world each year.”
The program’s first boarding school, Wellspring Academy of California, opened in September 2004. Located just 30 minutes outside Fresno, the 68-acre campus attracts approximately 100 students between ages 13-24 each year. Wellspring Academy College Program, specifically designed for college-aged students, opened last year on the California campus. Wellspring Academy of the Carolinas opened in February 2007 and attracts 50 students from ages 11-18 to its 220-acre campus in western North Carolina each year.
