High blood pressure significantly increases the risk of heart and stroke death in overweight and obese people, according to a report in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.

"We observed that cardiovascular risk is not clearly increased unless hypertension is present in these overweight and obese subjects," said Athanase Benetos, M.D., Ph.D., an investigator with the Centre d'Investigations Preventives et Cliniques (IPC) Paris and professor of medicine at the Medical School of Nancy, in France.
