Bleaching treatments at the dentist work can make the teeth sensitive. Over the counter tooth whitening products can erode enamel, causing permanent damage, making it important to find natural ways to maintain a bright gleaming smile.

Raymond Garrison, D.D.S., M.S., professor and chairman of the Wake Forest Baptist Department of Dentistry says, “We now know that there are foods that actually help to keep your teeth white rather than stain them. In fact, it may help patients avoid the time and expense of whitening retreatment.”

Garrison says foods can also help keep your smile bright after bleaching.

Garrison says if you want to use over the counter tooth whiteners make sure the product has the ADA (American Dental Association) seal on it.

If you have seals or bonds on your teeth, speak with your dentist about which whitener is best for you.

If you decide to have your teeth whitened at the dentist, you may have to have more than one session. Each visit can take 30 minutes to an hour.

To keep your teeth white, avoid tobacco, soy sauce, wine (red or white), coffee and tea.

Eating the right fruits and vegetables is a natural way to whiten teeth. Oranges, strawberries, dairy products and firm vegetables with fiber are also recommended as part of an overall healthy diet.

I agree. Drinking coffee is awful for your teeth. My teeth quickly become stained after drinking coffee. This is an excellent supplemental method to whitening your teeth. Thanks!
