Bleaching treatments at the dentist work can make the teeth sensitive. Over the counter tooth whitening products can erode enamel, causing permanent damage, making it important to find natural ways to maintain a bright gleaming smile.
Raymond Garrison, D.D.S., M.S., professor and chairman of the Wake Forest Baptist Department of Dentistry says, “We now know that there are foods that actually help to keep your teeth white rather than stain them. In fact, it may help patients avoid the time and expense of whitening retreatment.”
Garrison says foods can also help keep your smile bright after bleaching.
For a bright smile, consume firm fruits and vegetables that scrub the teeth. Examples include green beans, cauliflower, carrots and celery.
According to the professionals the scrubbing actions happens when you chew.
Saliva released during chewing also helps neutralize acids to protect tooth enamel.
Dairy products that are high in calcium help keep teeth healthy and white, especially hard cheeses that help remove food particles. The Wake Forest professionals explain dairy contains lactic acid to help prevent tooth decay.
Strawberries and oranges naturally polish the teeth.
Garrison says if you want to use over the counter tooth whiteners make sure the product has the ADA (American Dental Association) seal on it.
If you have seals or bonds on your teeth, speak with your dentist about which whitener is best for you.
If you decide to have your teeth whitened at the dentist, you may have to have more than one session. Each visit can take 30 minutes to an hour.
To keep your teeth white, avoid tobacco, soy sauce, wine (red or white), coffee and tea.
