Celery health benefits more than you might think: the good vegetable
If you’re looking for a low calorie, healthy snack, consider adding celery to your plate. The crunchy vegetable has a variety of health benefits for the brain. For men, the crunchy vegetable could also perk up your sex life.
One of the beneficial substances in celery is a flavonoid called luteolin that can protect from inflammation.
Celery compound is anti-inflammatory
Luteolin in celery has such a potent anti-inflammatory effect that researchers have studied the compound for treating multiple sclerosis that is linked to inflammation leading to degeneration of nerve fibers.
In 2008, Illinois University researchers studied luteolin found in celery blocks molecules that lead to brain degeneration – though they cautioned high doses of the substance were used in the study.
Luteolin might help the brain recover after stroke that comes from lack of blood flow to the brain, known as ischemic stroke, in addition to helping prevent colon cancer.
The finding, published July 2010 in "The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry” suggested luteolin should be studied further because it seems to have neuroprotective properties.
Celery can also keep blood pressure lower from phthalides - naturally occurring chemicals that relax the blood vessels and improve blood flow.
Mark Houston, M. D., director of the Hypertension Institute at St. Thomas Hospital, in Nashville said in an MSN report, "My patients who eat four sticks of celery a day have seen modest reductions in their blood pressure -- about 6 points systolic and 3 points diastolic.”
But there’s one more health benefit from eating celery that has nothing to do with the brain.
According to “The Sex for Life Diet”, eating celery releases phermones in men that attract women. Not only is celery good for the brain, but it might have an added perk that makes men irresistible to women.
