Bret Michaels out of Hospital but Cause of Hemorrhage Unknown
Bret Michaels, after suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage followed by a common complication known as hyponatremia, has been discharged from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery that will take time. No one knows what caused the subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) experienced by Bret Michaels.
Subarachnoid hemorrhage can cause pain once the bleeding stops. The clot that forms can put pressure on the surrounding area causing pain. A common cause of hemorrhage is a blow to the head or aneurysm, but Michaels' physician says neither scenario is the cause. Other reasons for SAH include high blood pressure, vasculitis (inflammation in the blood vessels), and congenital malformations in the vasculature of the brain.
According to Dr. Joseph Zabramski, chief of cerebrovascular surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, "This produces a great deal of stress on the body," he said. "This is like being involved in an accident from inside”. However, a blow to Bret Michael’s head a year ago would not have caused his hemorrhage and so far two tests have not revealed aneurysm. A third study is planned.
Bret Michaels has been advised by physicians to wait 4 to 6 weeks before resuming normal activity. Pain is one of the effects of experiencing a brain hemorrhage. Physicians say back spasms and headache are to be expected for Bret Michaels that may last 7 to 10 days.
Bret Michaels did not suffer an aneurysm, or at least it has not been diagnosed so far. Aneurysm in the brain is a common cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage that mandates surgery to remedy. In Michaels' case no surgery was performed, indicating the bleeding subsided with intensive standard treatment to lower blood pressure, rest, fluid restriction, medications, and very close monitoring.
The cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage suffered by Bret Michaels is still not known, but Michaels is expected to fully recover with receive therapy to regain strength. Bret Michaels is walking, talking, and planning a summer tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Causes of subarachnoid hemorrhage are, in some cases, never discovered, and physicians have not uncovered why it happened to Bret Michaels. For many patients, brain hemorrhage is devastating, and fifteen percent of patients die before reaching the hospital. Bret Michaels is out of the hospital and stable, but the cause of his subarachnoid hemorrhage is still not known.
