Researchers at Hallym University in the Republic of Korea published a study in April showing that applying a compound from vegetables, fruits, and nuts can lead to more youthful skin and works to reduce wrinkles. The scientists studied mice to find that ellagic acid reduces wrinkles, promotes collagen production, and protects from harmful UV rays. The result of the compound is more youthful skin.

Ellagic acid is a phytochemical found in raspberries, strawberries, walnuts, cranberries, pecans and pomegranates, in addition to other foods. Scientists tested hairless mice to find that ellagic acid protects against skin UV damage by blocking production of MMP (matrix metalloproteinase) enzymes that destroy skin collagen. They also found that the ellagic acid reduced inflammation associated with UV skin damage, making skin healthier and more youthful.

Eating healthy foods that contain ellagic acid is also beneficial for maintaining beautiful skin. Applying skin creams that contain ellagic acid can also help aging skin.

The researchers exposed 12 young hairless mice to ultraviolet radiation for eight weeks. The skin of mice resembles that of humans. They applied 10 microM applications of ellagic acid on their skin surface, even on the days they did not receive UV exposure. The researchers compared to mice not exposed to UV radiation, also applying ellagic acid, as well as a third group exposed to damaging ultraviolet light not receiving the skin treatment.

The mice that did not get the skin treatment developed wrinkles and thick skin. Those who were treated with ellagic acid from fruits and other foods showed reduced wrinkling and healthier skin. The compound reduced the amount of collagen degradation needed for plump healthy skin.

The study concluded that topical applications of ellagic acid, a phytochemical extracted from nuts, fruits and vegetables can help keep skin more youthful by preventing collagen breakdown. Ellagic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin, helping to prevent damage from ultraviolet radiation. Skin care products that are proven effective and safe for sensitive skin are difficult to find. The study showed that skin care products containing ellagic acid have proven benefits for reducing wrinkles and keeping skin youthful.
