Lauryn Louise Last Drowns Newborn in Toilet, Charged
Sixteen-year-old Lauryn Louise Last is charged with murder of her infant son from drowning. She is believed to have given birth to her infant son December 31. Last allegedly put the infant face down in the toilet, then tossed him in the trash after placing him in a garbage bag found amidst sixty tons of trash in Tacoma Washington. The teenager was charged with murder January 7, and is being held on $500,000 bail.
Lauryn Louise Last's father is also in jail for possession of firearms, methamphetamine and concealment of his grandson's birth.
According to an affidavit, Lauryn Louise Last, "put her baby face down into a toilet and allowed it to drown for several minutes until it died. Then she threw her son into the trash can outside in a plastic garbage bag."
DNA results confirming that Lauryn Louise Last is indeed the mother of the deceased infant may not be available for a month according to Port Angeles police Chief Terry Gallagher. If Last is found guilty of drowning her son, she may face life imprisonment. Authorities have charged her as an adult.
Lauryn Last, a resident of Port Angeles is charged with first-degree murder. Her father, Ronald Last, age 41 is being held at Clallam County jail, charged with gross misdemeanor.
Teenage mothers who kill their infants often hide their pregnancy from others. Though the incidence of unwanted teen pregnancies has declined over the years, many still resort to infanticide to avoid the consequences of unwanted pregnancy. Many teens resort to abandonment, others murder.
Lauryn Louise Last chose to murder her newborn son, for reasons that seem to defy explanation. Perhaps it is time to focus on research to identify and prevent such tragedies. We have read far too many news stories about infants who are murdered or abandoned by teenage mothers
