When is weight loss noticeable if people don't see my 80 lbs weight loss?
Weight loss results vary from person to person. You need to lose at least 10 pounds for anyone to see your weight loss in the face. We lose weight top down. There are many factors that decide when your or someone may notice your weight loss. some of these factors include your eating habits and most importantly your starting weight.
Today I read this letter which I would like to share with eMaxHealth readers for a discussion. The question is how soon do you see weight loss results.
"I would like to pose a question. This has been bothering me for a while. I see posts on several weight loss groups of member's photos of before and afters. Most of them are very dramatic differences with 30-40 lb weight loss. Congratulations to you all.
"I can always see a marked difference in the photos, and I applaud you. But, in a little over a year, I myself have lost over 80 lbs. I don't post photos because I have an aversion to getting my picture taken.
"Here's the part that bothers me. While I can see an amazing difference in all the photos, not one single person I know has ever remarked on my weight loss. Not unless I make some kind of reference to it. Why is that? Is 80 lbs not noticeable? I can't think that it isn't when I see the changes in other people's photos.
"Are they afraid to say something, or do they truly not see it? I know this probably sounds very petty, and that I am fishing for compliments. I'm not. It would just be nice to get a little acknowledgment/encouragement.
If anyone has any thoughts on this question, please feel free to air them," wrote one young mother in a weight loss group on Facebook where I am a member.
What would you write to this woman or anyone in similar situations?
I would say sometimes the slow change makes it harder to "notice" when you are with those people every day. Also, it may be that people notice your weight loss, but don't say anything because they don't know how you would take it. Maybe they just don't want to hurt your feelings I guess.
Don't worry if your weight loss goes unacknowledged. You are losing slowly on their faces. Perhaps people worry about saying something. Do they say you are looking great? As this is another way for them to say "wow you’ve lost weight!" You should be very content of your weight loss and I know you are not wanting complements but the biggest compliment you pay is from yourself! You should feel better, healthier, enjoy life in a better way without those extra 80 pounds.
Let's just do things without seeking compliments, notices or praise from other people. It will make your life more rewarding and satisfied.
By the way, did you know that some diets like Atkins and South Beach are set up to include an initial phase where you lose more weight because of more intense food restrictions during the initial phase? But know that Atkins diet has significant risks and I recommend reading this comparison between Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers and Zone Dieting for more information.
