"My boy son wants his ears pierced. His mother called and asked me my opinion, to which I said no. I explained to her that there was a verse in the Bible about markings and cutting on the human body. She didn't agree and said that I was taking the Scripture out of context. Does anyone know of multiple scriptures to back me up or to agree with her?," asks one parent on Facebook.

There is a specific verse in the Bible directly forbidding any piercing or tattoos. Here is the quote from Leviticus 19:28 which reads, "You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord."

Many young people, influenced by "celebrities," media and social trends embrace dangerous things that seem harmless. One of them is when they want their ears or other body parts pierced. Many people would call them "little harmless things." Not only body piercing and tattoos are unsafe and have long term negative health effects, but also they are against the Word of God, especially if you are a Christian and care about following Jesus daily.

Health Risks of Body Piercing

Not only dermatologists object to all forms of body piercing, but there is also these risks. "Health complications associated with body piercing include prolonged bleeding, scarring, tetanus, abscesses, boils and chronic infections such as halitosis (bad breath) from tongue rings. Infection of Hepatitis B and C also are a threat, with no effective cure. Any time permanent holes are made in the lips, nose and eyebrows they are not easy to repair. Ear piercing of the cartilage of the upper ear is frequently associated with prolonged infection and occasionally permanent disfigurement. Studs and rings can catch in clothes, and can cause large tears in the skin, lip, tongue, etc," reads the article linked in this paragraph.

Spiritual Harm and Damage of Body Piercing

From the Spiritual point of view there are four aspects that need to be looked upon. All of them are dangerous for your spiritual well-being and for your relation with God. All of them harm you spiritually.

Body Piercing Feeds Your Pride

If you are going to pierce you body that means you want to make some type of a statement. You want to stand out from the crowd. You want to say "look at me, look at me, aren't my piercings cool?" That is self-conceit and feeds pride. If you are a Christian and think this is OK that you may be deeply mislead because Jesus says that the people who seek glory and attention from other people can't have the correct faith.

"How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God," says the Lord Jesus in John's Gospel 5:44. This means that every time you do something with which you seek glory or attention or appreciation or even a thank you from other people, you see glory from other people, you seek attention and that's self-conceit and you can't seek both the glory from God and glory from people. Jesus said you can't serve two masters.

Little Harmless Things

Some people may say that piercing is a little harmless thing. First of all it is not harmless. But let's talk about the little things. One of the most important words of Jesus in the Gospels that reveal how we should live to be perfect to which he called us in Matthew 5:48 are the words about the "little things." He taught us that "if you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities." Luke 16:10

Many times when we talk about commandments that seem difficult to do people say "oh that's too heavy for me to carry." Well, you need to be in constant spiritual exercise. Consider the weight lifting. You probably can't lift 100 pounds today. However, you can lift 10 pounds. If you exercise daily and keep exercising for weeks and months, probably in several months you will lift more than 100 pounds. Isn't this right?

The word Asceticism, which means a life of discipline comes from the Greek word askesis, which means "exercise" or "training." Therefore, train yourself to be faithful in little things. Then you will be able to carry bigger things.

Parental Disapproval and Honoring Parents

Even if the above three points about the negative health effects of body piercing, pride and little things were not convincing enough know that you will be violating another commandment if you do body piercing against the will of your parents. Honoring your parents is the only commandment from the Ten Commandments that comes with a promise: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you," reads the Word of God in Exodus 20:12.

Here is what one parent writes on the subject.

One of our readers asked if piercing is ok for girls. The answer is no. The word of God is clear. The most important thing to understand here is that when people do this they invite attention. "look at me." Look how cool I am. "Isn't this beautiful?" Jesus says, how can you believe if you accept glory from men and not the glory that comes from God. These are two mutually exclusive ways. You can't serve two masters.
