I was always a healthy weight growing up and into my young 20s. Then, suddenly I suffered from mental health problems and decided to go onto antidepressants. While on antidepressants I gained a whopping extra 75 lbs and became very large and unhealthy. This made me even more depressed. After about a year of having all this extra weight, I decided enough was enough and wanted to try to lose the weight so I came of the medication and got serious about diet and exercise. Within one year and I was able to lose 69 lbs, but I am now at a loss of 74 lbs. Not only have I lost most of the weight, but I am much fitter than I ever was before. It has been very difficult to lose the weight, but it was the best choice I could have done as much I am happier than I have been in a few years.

My name is Charlotte Moran and I am from London, England. After gaining a sudden weight of 75 lbs I thought that antidepressants were to help your mental health without having bad side effects but instead, my weight plummeted high which caused my mental health to get worse.

eMaxHealth: How was your life limited due to your excessive weight gain?

My dramatic increase of weight not only impacted on my mental health but also my physical health. I completely lost all my confidence, going out with friends, wearing colorful and stylish clothes. Instead, I would hide away and wear dark clothes so I wouldn’t be noticeable to others. One particular time where I really noticed how much my life was limited was when I was at a funfair and I was too large to fit on one of the rides, at that point I knew I had let my weight get out of control and that a change had to be made. My blood pressure was slowly getting higher and higher and I knew it would continue if I continued with the weight gain.

eMaxHealth: Did you have to deal with any struggles in order to lose weight? What were your greatest obstacles in losing weight?

When it comes to losing the weight I can’t say I have massively struggled. Although I love my food I haven’t found it to difficult to cut down. My biggest struggle would be to keep up with the exercise and regularly going to the gym. I have never particularly enjoyed working out, but I made sure to stick to a regular routine.

eMaxHealth: What diet or a weight loss plan did you follow in order to achieve this spectacular weight loss?

I never followed a particular weight loss plan. Instead, I made my own plan and stuck to a calorie controlled diet. I had an allowance of 1,400 calories per day and I would allow myself to eat whatever I fancied that day as long as it was within my calorie limit. I would also regularly treat myself to cheat meals and cheat days if I went for mini breaks away

eMaxHealth: What tips would you share with eMaxHealth readers who have gained weight and are trying to lose.

If I was to share any tips or advice it would be that you are only human. You can’t be perfect all the time. You will have plenty ups and down. There will be weeks where you gain a few pounds, but with persistence and motivation they can be re-lost plus lose more on top.

I would also recommend to take regular progress pictures. Sometimes I found it difficult to see any progress until I looked at the pictures and saw how far I had come. Lastly I would recommend to take measurements of your body e.g waist, stomach, hips etc sometimes the scale may not go down but body measurements do.

eMaxHealth: Did you make any lifestyle changes that are working for you?

The main lifestyle changes I made was getting into a regular gym routine and calorie counting my food.

eMaxHealth: What do you want other people who are struggling to lose weight to know?

Since I have made the choice of a healthier lifestyle I am much happier than I was a few years ago. My health has got much better and I am physically much fitter than I ever was before.

eMaxHealth: How would you support a friend who is trying - or struggling - to lose weight and lead a healthier life?

For anyone that is looking to start to lose weight, find a plan that will work for you and stick to it and you will see results. It can be difficult as I thought the same but it can be done and I’m so proud of how far I’ve come.
