FDA Clears Innovative DRX-1 System From Carestream Health
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) today gave marketing clearance to a groundbreaking product from Carestream Health: The CARESTREAM DRX-1 System is the industry’s first wireless digital radiography (DR) detector - the size of a standard cassette - that fits existing x-ray rooms without having to replace or modify existing equipment.
With this clearance, Carestream Health can begin taking orders for the product. Shipping will begin in the next several weeks, following trade trials and other advance preparations that are underway.
“This innovative wireless detector presents an extremely attractive option for facilities that want to improve productivity and image quality in existing radiology rooms, but do not have the budget for equipment replacement,” said Diana L. Nole, President, Digital Medical Solutions, Carestream Health. “Not only can facilities use the cassette-size detector with existing x-ray equipment, but they also can continue to use film-based or computed radiography cassettes, if desired.”
Equally important, the wireless functionality of the DRX-1 can improve efficiency by allowing a much more flexible workflow that helps save time and money, while offering the benefits of a digital environment. Ultimately, patients benefit since facilities can perform imaging exams more quickly and can send patients’ images and accompanying radiology reports to referring physicians electronically via image-and-information management equipment.
Additionally, digital imaging is a plus for the environment, since it can be performed without the need for chemicals and without the need to dispose of those chemicals after use.
Carestream Health markets a broad portfolio of CR and DR systems that equips hospitals, outpatient imaging centers, orthopedic practices and other healthcare providers with digital image capture for x-ray imaging studies.
Carestream Health, Inc., is a leading provider of dental and medical imaging systems and healthcare IT solutions; molecular imaging systems for the life science research and drug discovery/development market segments; and x-ray film and digital x-ray products for the non-destructive testing market.
