Breast Cancer Treatment Offers Better Outcome To Women With Implants

Women with early-stage breast cancer who have undergone breast augmentation may be treated successfully with a partial-breast radiation treatment called brachytherapy, according to a study presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Patients treated with brachytherapy have better cosmetic outcomes and avoid the risk of the implant hardening, compared to patients who undergo whole-breast radiation therapy.

Molecular Breast Imaging: Clear Look Beyond Mammography, MRI, Ultrasound

Dilon Technologies, Inc., a leader in molecular breast imaging, announced today that leading physicians will present studies at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) that demonstrate Breast Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) goes beyond mammography, MRI and ultrasound, and is emerging as a cost-effective adjunct imaging modality for breast cancer diagnostics.

Researchers are advancing the early detection of breast cancer, especially in difficult-to-diagnose patients, using this molecular breast imaging technique.

Breast cancer patients who receive breast-conserving therapy and radiation do not need a follow-up mammogram until 12 months after radiation, despite current American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines that recommend follow-up mammograms at between six and 12 months after radiation, according to a November 15 study in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, the official journal of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

Psychological Intervention Improves Breast Cancer Survival

Women who participate in psychological measures that provide stress reduction and lifestyle changes have a significant reduction in death and breast cancer recurrence. The surprising study showed a 45% decline in breast cancer recurrence in women who were randomized to receive psychological intervention after being diagnosed with the disease. Death rates from breast cancer were reduced by 56%.

Good Night's Sleep, Exercise Protect from Breast Cancer?

Women who exercise regularly, and get at least seven hours of sleep each night, can significantly reduce their risk of breast cancer. The combination is important. Women, who exercise without needed slumber, put themselves at higher risk. The findings come from the American Association for Cancer Research, presented at the Seventh Annual International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research.

Breast Cancer Eliminating Compounds Show Promise

Two new compounds created by a University of Central Florida professor show early promise for destroying breast cancer tumors. The research could become a breakthrough in breast cancer treatment.

Associate Professor James Turkson’s compounds disrupt the formation and spread of breast cancer tumors in tests on mice. The compounds, S3I-201 and S3I-M2001, break up a cancer-causing protein called STAT3, and researchers have observed no negative side effects so far.

Black Women Avoid Breast Reconstruction Surgery After Mastectomy

Black women are 47% less likely than other women to undergo breast reconstruction after having a mastectomy, according to a study published in the November issue of Archives of Surgery, HealthDay/U.S. News & World Report reports. Undergoing breast reconstruction surgery immediately after having a mastectomy has several advantages, including aesthetic, psychosocial well-being and cost-effectiveness, according to the Johns Hopkins University researchers who conducted the study.

Latina women who prefer speaking Spanish are more likely than other ethnic groups to express regret or dissatisfaction with their breast cancer treatment, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Despite receiving similar treatment, Latina women were 5.6 times more likely than white women to report high levels of dissatisfaction and regret about their breast cancer treatment decision.
