Statins Cut Heart-Attack Risk In Women

For the first time ever, a new study is providing direct evidence that cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins can prevent heart attacks, strokes and deaths among women.

The study, released Sunday at the American Heart Association's conference in New Orleans, found that statins can cut heart attacks and strokes by about half -- even among people with normal cholesterol levels.

About 40 percent of the study's participants were women, making it the first large-scale study of its kind that included a significant number of women.

GI Medications Reduce Protection Against Heart Attack

Medco Health Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MHS) today presented a study at the 2008 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association that showed an increased risk for major cardiovascular events in patients taking clopidogrel (the active ingredient in Plavix) and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) together.

Early Heart Attack Prevention Averts Future Heart Attacks, Death

Despite substantial progress in the diagnosis and treatment of heart attack patients, prevention of recurrent heart attacks continues to be a major clinical challenge. A new study showed that patients who suffered a non-fatal heart attack within the first three months of hospitalization for chest pain had a significantly higher risk for dying or having another heart attack (in the following three months to four years) compared with patients who did not experience a heart attack during the same initial period.

Timing Is Everything For Heart Attack Patients

There is strong evidence that getting to the hospital quickly during a heart attack is critical, since early treatment saves both lives and heart muscle. And if the responsible coronary artery is completely blocked, it should be opened as soon as possible. What about patients with incomplete blockages, who have ACS or acute coronary syndrome? They should get to the hospital just as fast, but once there and on medical treatment, do they need to race to the cath lab?

Some proteins form early-warning symptoms for heart attack

A team of Johns Hopkins biochemists has identified a mixed bag of five key proteins out of thousands secreted into blood draining from the heart's blood vessels that may together or in certain quantities form the basis of a far more accurate early warning test than currently in use of impending heart attack in people with severely reduced blood flow, or ischemia.

Unstable Workplace Increases Heart Attack Risk

Predictable workplaces are healthy workplaces, a new study suggests. When employees feel ambiguous about their role in the organization and there is a lack of clear-cut communication, they might be at higher risk for heart attacks over time.

The 18-year study from Finland examined the possible link between job control factors and heart attacks — acute myocardial infarction — among 7,663 private sector employees.

Time change shifts affect risk of heart attack

Adjusting the clocks to summer time on the last Sunday in March increases the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) in the following week. In return, changing time and clock back in the autumn reduces the risk, albeit to a lesser extent. This according to a new Swedish study published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.

New Line Of Defence For Heart Attacks

Primary angioplasty is set to become the nation's first line of treatment for heart attacks, saving hundreds of lives each year, according to the National Infarct Angioplasty Project (NIAP) final report launched today by the Department of Health.

The NIAP study has concluded that is both feasible and cost-effective to offer angioplasty as an emergency treatment for 97% of the population of England.
