ASH welcomes the government's commitment to maintain the level of tobacco taxation despite the reduction in VAT announced in the Pre-Budget Report. However, the government is urged to increase tobacco tax above inflation in the next budget to help the large majority of smokers who want to quit.

Sarnia-Lambton youth are taking 'ACTION' to break the link between tobacco products and sports and recreation during the 2nd Advocates Challenging the Tobacco Industry in Ontario Now (ACTION) Week, November 23-29.

To celebrate ACTION Week, Lambton high school students can attend the November 27 Sarnia Legionnaires' hockey game for the Tobacco Face-Off Contest FREE of charge with Student ID and a donation of gently used sport and recreation equipment to the YMCA RASP (Recreation and Sport Program). The school with the most students attending will win a visit from a guest speaker.

Children of mothers who smoked during pregnancy had more damage to their arteries in young adulthood than offspring of non-smokers and the association was even stronger if both parents smoked, researchers reported in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology: Journal of the American Heart Association.

In the March 2008 Budget, the Chancellor announced that the new UK Border Agency, working with HM Revenue & Customs, would develop a new strategy to tackle tobacco smuggling, to be published as part of the November Pre Budget Report.
