Insomnia Drug Tasimelteon Resets Sleep, Helps Jet Lag

Results of phase II and III trials of an insomnia drug pill from Vanda Pharmaceuticals suggest that the melatonin analogue tasimelteon could be a therapeutic approach to manage transient insomnia caused by jet lag and shift work.

The way tasimelteon works is that this sleeping pill helps the body produce more of the sleep hormone melatonin may improve sleep for jet-lagged travelers and shift workers. It resets the body's natural sleep rhythm and could be in the market available for sleepless consumers within three years.

Researcher Creates Zzoma For Sleep Apnea Treatment

Positional sleep apnea sufferers may soon find Zzoma, an alternative to CPAP machines, currently considered the most effective treatment for patients who stop breathing during sleep. Though CPAP (a machine that blows pressurized air through a mask to open the airway) is effective, approximately 50% of those suffering from positional sleep apnea use the machines incorrectly. Many patients find them burdensome and uncomfortable, causing non-compliance.

Good Night's Sleep, Exercise Protect from Breast Cancer?

Women who exercise regularly, and get at least seven hours of sleep each night, can significantly reduce their risk of breast cancer. The combination is important. Women, who exercise without needed slumber, put themselves at higher risk. The findings come from the American Association for Cancer Research, presented at the Seventh Annual International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research.

Quarter Of Sleepless Children Suffer From Obesity

Universite de Montreal researchers have found that 1 quarter of children who sleep fewer than 10 hours a night become overweight by age 6

Between the ages of six months and six years old, close to 90 percent of children have at least one sleep-related problem. Among the most common issues are night terrors, teeth-grinding and bed-wetting.

Eye Conditions Linked With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

If a good night's sleep helps the brain and body perform better, it's a good guess that sleep problems can cause more than just fatigue. Numerous studies have shown a connection between sleep disorders and medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, and metabolic disorders, including the risk of obesity and diabetes mellitus. In the November issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Mayo Clinic researchers outline several interesting associations between sleep disorders and eye disease.

Obstructive sleep apnea and eye disorders

Sleep Apnea May Be Risk Factor for Sudden Cardiac Death

After studying the sleep characteristics of nearly 11,000 adults in an overnight sleep laboratory, Mayo Clinic researchers suggest that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) - and, in particular, the low nighttime oxygen saturation of the blood it causes - may be a risk factor for sudden cardiac death (SCD).

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition that disrupts breathing during sleep and is associated with obesity.

The study identified OSA as one of two traits that contribute to the highest risk of sudden cardiac death. The other is age - patients who are 60 years old or older.

The study is the first to show a specific neurochemical difference in the brains of adults with primary insomnia.

A study in the Nov. 1 issue of the journal Sleep is the first demonstration of a specific neurochemical abnormality in adults with primary insomnia, providing greater insight to the limited understanding of the condition's pathology.

Sleep Apnea Is Linked To Dietary Hqbits

This study on sleep qpneq is the first to explore the dietary habits of people suffering from severe obstructive sleep apnea, a sleep disordered breathing condition.

A study in the October 15 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine shows that unrelated to obesity, people with severe SDBs consume a more unhealthy diet, which may be a factor contributing to greater cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. These findings were most evident among women.

Insomnia in women with breast cancer linked to heart rate

This study is the first to analyze both hormonal and autonomic responses in metastatic breast cancer patients suffering from insomnia.

Westchester, Ill. –A study in the October 15 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine shows that respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is a significant predictor of insomnia in women with breast cancer and confirmed that longer nocturnal wake episodes were associated with a flatter diurnal cortisol slope.
