Fibroid growth in women over age 35 declines with age for white women, but not for black women, which might explain why black women typically have more symptoms than white women, according to a study published in the December issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Reuters Health reports.

Women's Society Hails Statins Heart Attack Risk Study

For the first time ever, a new study is providing direct evidence that cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins can prevent heart attacks, strokes and deaths among women.

The study, released Sunday at the American Heart Association’s conference in New Orleans, found that stains can cut heart attacks and strokes by about half - even among people with normal cholesterol levels.

About 40 percent of the study’s participants were women, making it the first large-scale study of its kind that included a significant number of women.
