Researchers have hypothesized that people with lower IQs may have a higher risk of adult mental disorders, but few studies have looked at the relationship between low childhood IQ and psychiatric disorders later in life.

The Debate About ADHD, Parents Need To Do More

Attention Deficit Disorder can be helped greatly if it is diagnosed in the early years. Unfortunately, since schools are cutting down back on many of their services, a good work-up by an educational psychologist may not be done and the child may fall farther and farther behind in school.

Many of these kids drop out, join gangs, and eventually may end up in prison unless they get adequate help. Seventy-five percent of dropouts end up in prison; a scary statistic.

In contrast to recent findings, two of the most common medications used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) do not appear to cause genetic damage in children who take them as prescribed, according to a new study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Duke University Medical Center.

Ginkgo Biloba For Dementia Prevention

Schwabe, the manufacturer of the Ginkgo extract EGb 761 , believes that the GEM study results do not allow a final conclusion on the potential of the extract in dementia prevention.

GEM is one of five studies that have been or are investigating the effect of standardized Ginkgo extract on the prevention of dementia. The GEM study investigated the probability of developing dementia in 3069 subjects (average age on entry 79 years) receiving either 240 mg EGb 761 or placebo daily. Over the 6-year treatment period, compliance fell to only 60%.

Eisai Corporation of North America announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved BANZEL (rufinamide) for the adjunctive treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in children 4 years and older and adults. One of the most severe forms of childhood epilepsy, LGS is characterized by multiple and frequent seizures. LGS accounts for 1 to 4 percent of all childhood epilepsy cases; approximately 300,000 children under the age of 14 in the U.S. have epilepsy.

A specific population of brain cells could provide a target for developing new medications aimed at helping people learn to mute the fears underlying anxiety disorders, according to NIMH-supported scientists.

UCB announced today that Keppra XR offers convenient dosing for people with epilepsy. Keppra XR was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2008 for use as an add-on to other antiepileptic treatments for people with partial-onset seizures who are 16 years of age and older.

While many people with epilepsy are successfully treated with one or more of the currently available antiepileptic drugs, a significant percentage still live with uncontrolled seizures or intolerable side effects.

Is ADHD More Likely To Affect Movement In Boys, Girls

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) appears to affect movement in boys more than it does in girls, according to a study published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders found in children. Symptoms include impulsiveness, hyperactivity, such as not being able to sit still, and inattention or constant daydreaming. Few studies have been done that compare ADHD and movement in both boys and girls.
