Vasectomy Reversal: What Men Should Know

Men who have had vasectomy can opt for reversal. Most often, vasectomy reversal is successful. There are no absolute guarantees.

Starting a new family may be your goal. Some men decide to have their vasectomy reversed because of pain in the testicles, known as post-vasectomy pain syndrome. The cause is unknown. Religious reasons can also play a role. Newly practicing Catholics may find themselves re-thinking birth control.

Researchers Discover How To Halt Prostate Cancer Spread

There is a new breakthrough in search for prostate cancer treatment. Following three years of study, University of Southern California researchers have found a way to halt the spread of prostate cancer. Suppression of the GRP78 protein, a genetic biomarker of aggressive prostate cancer, leads researchers to what they consider a "breakthrough" in cancer research. Amy Lee, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, the study's principal investigator, says, "This research has far-reaching implications in a wide range for human cancers,"

Merck's HPV Vaccine Gardasil Shows Potential For Men

Merck & Co has presented data on Gardasil which shows that the vaccine, which is approved for cervical cancer, is also effective in the prevention of human papillomavirus-related disease in young men.

Data from a Phase III trial in men aged 16 to 26,which was presented at the European Research Organisation on Genital Infection and Neoplasia meeting in Nice, France, showed that Gardasil prevented 90% of external genital lesions caused by human papillomavirus types 6, 11, 16 and 18. These are the only data evaluating efficacy of any HPV vaccine in preventing disease in males, Merck noted.

Prostate Cancer Screening Is Muddled And Confusing

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in men in the United States and 1 in 6 men will receive this diagnosis in their lifetime. The Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test was approved by the FDA as a screening test for prostate cancer in 1986 and its use has increased since that time. Most male patients are aware of this prostate cancer test and ask for it at their annual exam.

Boys may be protected against testicular cancer if mothers had gestational hypertension

Women who experience severe gestational hypertension may give birth to boys at lower risk for testicular cancer, although the exact reasons why are still unclear, according to a paper published in the November 1, 2008, issue of Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Andreas Pettersson, M.D., a doctoral student at Karolinska Institute in Sweden, said the protective effect of gestational hypertension may be due to the hormones that are released when a placenta malfunctions.
