Demanding Access To Female Condoms

An international coalition of organizations that represent Latin American women and Latina women in the United States is demanding increased access to the female condom as an essential strategy to fight HIV/AIDS.

The 37-member coalition, which includes 28 organizations from 11 Latin American nations and 9 Latina advocacy and service organizations from the U.S., has released a World AIDS Day statement that calls on governments and international donors to step up their investment in programs that distribute the female condom and educate women and men on its use.

Mayo Clinic Seeks New Therapies For Alcoholic Hepatitis

A new study from Mayo Clinic finds the use of the drug therapy etanercept ineffective in treating alcoholic hepatitis, an acute inflammation of the liver caused by excessive consumption of alcohol. The results of the study are published in the December issue of Gastroenterology.

Alcoholic hepatitis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Severe alcohol-related liver disease carries a poor prognosis. Several research studies have worked to find a successful treatment for alcoholic hepatitis, but no consensus has been reached on the most effective treatment regimen.

Student paramedics from the University of the West of England have visited secondary and special schools to give first-aid skills training, utilising three real-life topics relevant to young peoples' everyday lives as part of an Aim Higher campaign.

The three strands of the campaign include; 'Cut it Out' - the dangers and consequences of carrying knives; 'Tackling drugs – Saving Lives' the consequences of taking drugs and what to do when things go wrong; 'Don't Walk away' the effects of using alcohol and what to do when things go wrong.

Lake Forest Hospital Announces New Imaging Center

Sen. Max Baucus’ white paper, Call to Action: Health Reform 2009, is on target and reflects a “thorough and comprehensive review of the current health care system’s flaws and needs,” according to Jim King, M.D., chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors.

Five Million People Participate In Self-Help Groups Each Year

New data indicate that 2.3 million people who participate in self-help groups for alcohol or illicit drug use currently abstain from use of these substances. Based on a nationwide survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the report offers other data highlighting the use and benefits of these groups.

Among the report’s notable findings:

• An annual average of 5 million persons aged 12 or older attended a self-help group in the past year because of their use of alcohol or illicit drugs
