The Debate About ADHD, Parents Need To Do More

Attention Deficit Disorder can be helped greatly if it is diagnosed in the early years. Unfortunately, since schools are cutting down back on many of their services, a good work-up by an educational psychologist may not be done and the child may fall farther and farther behind in school.

Many of these kids drop out, join gangs, and eventually may end up in prison unless they get adequate help. Seventy-five percent of dropouts end up in prison; a scary statistic.

Over the river and through the woods, to grandmother's house we go! Or on the interstate ... the friendly skies ... you get the picture.

Yes, it's time for the annual holiday trip to visit loved ones. Whether you're a newbie when it comes to traveling with kids or a seasoned pro, Lori Polakowski, a former flight attendant and individual family services coordinator with Beaumont's Parenting program, offers these tips.

General:

* Pack only what you need for the trip. You can buy diapers and wipes at your destination, and rent larger items.

Stories about doping – using performance-enhancing drugs – among professional and Olympic athletes have been regular fodder for the news media in recent years, but what about the trend in use by younger, more vulnerable high school-aged athletes?

Educating Patients Transitioning CFC To HFA Inhalers

In less than 3 months, life-saving albuterol inhalers used by nearly 40 million patients with respiratory disorders will no longer be sold. After December 31, 2008, it will no longer be permissible to manufacture or sell albuterol inhalers in the U.S. that contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants, because they destroy the Earth's ozone layer. These inhalers have been replaced with four distinct non-CFC propelled alternatives, which contain hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant.

Parents Keep Halloween Healthy

Modern Halloween and trick or treating comes from Ireland. Irish farmers went from house to house begging for food to be used at the village Halloween celebration. They promised good luck to those who gave them good food and a trick to those who refused.

How To Talk To Kids About Disabilities

If parents can teach their children a simple way of understanding disabilities, it will be easier for the youngsters to approach those in a wheelchair or with another obvious difference. Instead of "disability," Scarpace encourages parents to use the word "adapt."

"The key to using the word 'adapt' when talking about a disability is to reinforce that everyone adapts every day," Scarpace says.

Safe Haven Law Does Not Absolve Parents Of Responsibility

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is letting Nebraskans know that leaving a child at a hospital does not terminate parental rights.

Fourteen children and youth have been abandoned at hospitals under LB 157 since the bill became law in July, with all instances occurring this month.

Legislative Bill 157, which went into effect in July, prohibits prosecution when a child is left at a licensed Nebraska hospital. While they cannot be charged for abandoning a child, parents and guardians using Nebraska's "safe haven" law can be charged for other offenses.

The first few weeks of middle school are a frenzy of friends, parties, and school events. It's also time for parents to start talking with their kids about the dangers of drinking alcohol, according to The Science Inside Alcohol Project of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Nearly twenty percent of 14 year-olds say they've been drunk at least once, according to the U.S. Surgeon General, and recent news points out dangers of alcohol use by the young:
