Barcode Chip from Caltech Revolutionizes Blood Testing

Researchers at Caltech have developed a rapid, inexpensive means of screening for diseases such as cancer and heart disease. The device is expected to revolutionize blood testing by eliminating time and expense.

The Integrated Blood-Barcode Chip, or IBBC, was developed by lead researcher James R. Heath, the Elizabeth W. Gilloon Professor and professor of chemistry, in conjunction with Rong Fan, a postdoctoral professor, and graduate student Ophir Vermesh, and Leroy Hood, Institute Systems Biology president in Seattle Washington.

Amazon Addresses Gadget Packaging

Finally, one of my pet peeves in regard to how producers package health gadgets or any products is being addressed by Amazon. They are introducing "Frustration Free packaging" in time for the holidays.

My cortisol levels start to surge when I receive a package with plastic form fitted around the object, metal twisty wires holding it together and plastic so tough my scissors can't even cut through it. None of it is recyclable and usually the packaging is bigger than the product inside.

Though CPAP (a machine that blows pressurized air through a mask to open the airway) is effective, approximately 50% of those suffering from positional sleep apnea use the machines incorrectly. Many patients find them burdensome and uncomfortable, causing non-compliance.
