Good Nutrition Is Part Of Holiday Season

Traveling with your family can be overwhelming, especially during the busy holiday season. Unfortunately many get drawn into buying an unhealthy snack or meal that might not otherwise be purchased. At airports, it's easy to wind up eating unhealthy foods or become dehydrated on a long trip, but whether you're in a rush or have time to spend before a flight, you can help your family make good choices to stay happy and healthy.

No Need To Forego Nutrition In Tight Economic Times

Consumer research just released by consulting firm Booz & Company confirmed that U.S. consumers have cut back spending significantly over the past six months and that more than one third of consumers have made measurable cutbacks in frequent purchases, such as dining out. That means more home-cooked meals and the opportunity to prepare healthier food. Contrary to popular belief, fresh produce doesn't have to break the food budget, particularly if you count on potatoes.

Nutrient Related Facts About Today's Food Supply

Consuming a balanced diet that meets the recommended servings of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, essential fatty acids and lean sources of protein still may not ensure ample nutrient intake due to changes in our food supply.

Changes in the average nutrient content of 43 fruits and vegetables between 1950 and 1999 resulted in the following:

• 6% decrease in protein
• 16% decrease in calcium
• 9% decrease in phosphorus
• 15% decrease in iron
• 38% decrease in riboflavin
• 20% decrease in ascorbic acid

Nutritious Diet In A Fast Food World

A nutritious diet is not seen as being as important as physical activity when it comes to college students' health and wellness efforts, according to Indiana University researchers, even when the students live in an environment that provides classes, cues and motivation to eat healthily.

"Personal preferences triumph over discipline" when it comes to nutrition and healthy eating, the researchers note.

Cancer Patients Take Control Through Good Nutrition

Cancer and its treatment make it challenging for patients to get the necessary amounts of calories, protein and nutrients they need to help maintain a strong nutritional status. Because of this, patients often lose significant amounts of lean muscle mass and weight because they don't have an appetite, feel nauseous or have a strong aversion to foods. These symptoms can lead to clinical malnutrition, which may be found in 45 to 80 percent of cancer patients, and contribute to a weakened immune system and associated higher risk of infection.
