A groundbreaking new study published in the November 2008 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1 shows that eaters of lower energy dense breakfast have improved diet quality, and may have a better ability to maintain a healthy weight. The study found that those who enjoy a less energy dense morning meal have diets that are richer in important vitamins and minerals and lower in saturated fat and cholesterol compared to those who consume a more energy dense meal.

Daily Snack Bars May Facilitate Weight Loss

Snacking -- at least on the right kind of food -- may help with weight control, according to a recently completed pilot study at The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center. In the pilot study, 20 overweight adults consumed two KIND Fruit & Nut Delight Bars per day for eight weeks along with their habitual diet. The group experienced an average weight loss of 0.6 pounds, and a reduction of 0.2 in their BMI, along with lowered blood pressure (-3.6 systolic and -1.7 diastolic).

Survey: Americans Crave Easier Ways To Eat Healthfully

The U.S. is at a crossroads when it comes to nutrition advice. For decades, Americans have heard a lot about what not to eat, and much less about nutrient-rich foods to enjoy when building a healthy diet. Various stamps, stars and seals on food packaging labels also tend to focus on what foods don't contain -- like fat, sugar and salt -- rather than the valuable nutrients consumers should look for.

Adopting a vegetarian diet has many benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer, while also conserving fresh water, fertile topsoil and other limited resources that go into creating a meat-based diet.

Here are five tips to help get you started from Beaumont Hospital dietitian and vegetarian Catherine Welemirov:

Mediterranean, Low-Carb Diets Safe And Effective Weight-Loss Diets

Research on the safety and effectiveness of different diets has been previously limited due to the high number of participants who drop out of studies and because the length of time that the participants are followed is often too short. Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, Israel, and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s (BWH) Channing Laboratory have effectively evaluated three different weight-loss diets over two years and found that both Mediterranean and Low-carbohydrate diets are as effective in achieving weight-loss as low-fat diets.

Med People Shun Med Diet

Hailed by experts as keeping people slim, healthy and long-lived, the Mediterranean diet has followers all over the world – but is increasingly disregarded around the Mediterranean.

According to FAO Senior Economist Josef Schmidhuber, over the past 45 years the famed diet revolving around fresh fruit and vegetables has “decayed into a moribund state” in its home area.

Weight Loss Study Compares Low Carbohydrate/High Protein Diets

A widely reported Israeli study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, compared three popular weight loss diets - low fat, which was attributed to the American Heart Association, low carbohydrate/high protein based on the Atkins diet, and Mediterranean style. The researchers found that people on the low carbohydrate/high protein diet lost slightly more weight over a two year period. Does that mean that people who are trying to lose weight should adopt a low carbohydrate/high protein diet?

Unrestricted Low-Carb Diet Wins Hands Down

The New England Journal of Medicine has just come out with perhaps the most definitive comparison of low-fat, Mediterranean and low-carb diets ever, and the findings dovetail very nicely with what we’ve been discussing here recently about the merits of the Primal Blueprint. I think it also addresses some of the concerns shared about the so-called “restrictiveness” of my PB plan.
