VAP Cholesterol Test Identifies Treatment Effects Of Combination Therapy

Using the VAP Cholesterol Test from Atherotech, Inc., investigators led by Michel Farnier M.D., of Point Medical, Rond Point de la Nation, Dijon, France, have reported beneficial changes in lipoprotein subclasses and LDL particle size using combination therapy. The information could be helpful to physicians because of the known association between abnormal lipoprotein subfractions and increased cardiovascular risk in patients with mixed hyperlipidemia.

Use of the cholesterol medication Crestor, manufactured by AstraZeneca, to prevent cardiovascular events in patients who do not have high cholesterol levels but have high levels of C-reactive protein would increase U.S. health care costs by $10 billion annually, according to an analysis released on Monday, USA Today reports (Sternberg, USA Today, 11/10).

Statins Do Not Increase ALS Risk

A new long-term study has shown that there is no link between cholesterol lowering drug statins and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had received notes to Adverse Event Reporting System linking cholesterol lowering statins to ALS. The numbers of those reports were higher than it was expected to be. This is why FDA started examining the possible link between Lou Gehrig's disease and and statins to ensure patient safety.

Inhibiting Cholesterol-Associated Protein Reduces High-Risk Blockages In Arteries

Using the drug darapladib, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and colleagues have inhibited a cholesterol-and immune system-associated protein, thereby reducing the development of heart-disease plaques that may cause death, heart attacks, and strokes in a pig model of atherosclerosis and diabetes. The study appeared online this week in Nature Medicine.

Cholesterol lowering drugs, cancer risk not supported with evidence

No link between cholesterol-lowering medication and increased cancer risk.

Scientists in Oxford published data last week from the ongoing SHARP and IMPROVE-IT clinical trials, which shows no evidence for a link between cholesterol-lowering medication and an increased risk of cancer.

The data was collected in response to evidence previously reported from the SEAS trial – also published today – which suggested that such a link did exist.

Dr Mike Knapton, Director of Prevention and Care at the British Heart Foundation (BHF) said:
