Losing weight is difficult. Much research has been devoted to developing drugs that promise weight loss. Few weight loss programs have been successful. Bariatric surgery has become an option, but it is not without risks. According to a study published November 26 in the journal Cell, scientists have isolated a natural compound that promotes weight loss in mice by curbing appetite. The compound, called NAPES, when injected into mice in the lab, stimulated neurons in the brain that halted hunger.

Fashion Sanctuary Recalls Fat Loss Capsules Found

Fashion Sanctuary is recalling all lot codes of Zhen De Shou Fat Loss Capsules sold in 10 count blister cards. The recall was initiated after notification by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that lab analysis of Zhen De Shou samples found the product to contain undeclared sibutramine, making it an unapproved drug. Sibutramine is an FDA approved drug used as an appetite suppressant for weight loss.

Self-Weighing Could Help Teens Achieve Healthy Weight Control

Overweight teens who weigh themselves at least once a week are more likely to engage in other healthy weight control measures than teens who step on the scale less frequently, according to a new small study.

Self-weighing can be a successful tool for adults, but some concern exists that recommending the behavior could backfire with teens who struggle with obesity.

Undeclared Analogue Found In A Slimming Product

The Hong Kong Department of Health appealed to members of the public not to buy or use a slimming product named "Kalomees" as it was found to have contained an undeclared drug analogue that may cause serious side effect.

A spokesman for the department said that laboratory tests on the product sample today showed the presence of N,N-didesmethylsibutramine which is an analogue of sibutramine.

The sample was obtained from a beauty parlour in Tuen Mun during market surveillance recently.

The study found that those who enjoy a less energy dense morning meal have diets that are richer in important vitamins and minerals and lower in saturated fat and cholesterol compared to those who consume a more energy dense meal.

With childhood obesity increasing, school administrators and public health officials are reducing availability of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) in schools. In a study published in the November/December 2008 issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, researchers found that reduction or elimination of sugar-sweetened beverages from school menus has little effect on total consumption by adolescents.
