Researchers, using DNA microassay have found a wide array of bacteria in cigarettes. The study is the first to show that cigarettes contain bacteria that can harm human health. Some of the bacteria discovered include those found in soil, responsible for food-borne illness, lung infection, in addition to one type of bacteria responsible for ten percent of hospital acquired infection in the United States - and the discovery is just in time for the Great American Smokeout 2009.
The makers of Vicks Sinex Nasal Spray voluntarily recalled approximately 120,000 bottles after finding the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia in a small amount of the product made in Germany and sold in the United States. Thus far, no one has reported becoming ill after using the nasal spray.
