Cod liver oil can allow rheumatoid arthritis patients cut the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
A team of researchers from Dundee University examined 97 arthritis patients taking NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen. Patients were taking 10g of cod liver oil a day during 12 weeks. After they started to reduce NSAIDs or cut completely if possible. The study lasted 36 weeks.
49 of the patients were taking cod liver oil, 48 of them were taking a placebo. 58 patients (60% of all participants) completed the study. 19 (39%) of those taking fish oil were able to cut drug use by 30%. 5 (10%) of those taking the placebo were able to cut drug use by 30%.
Arthritis patients use much more drugs than those taking the drugs as painkillers. NSAIDs are known to have adverse side effects, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, heart attack, and stroke. If there is a way to reduce the amount of drugs used as painkillers, patients will be more successful to survive the pain and have less adverse side effects.
However, researchers advise all rheumatoid arthritis patients to consult with their doctors before changing the amount of drugs used. Besides, doctors must be aware of the type of supplements taken. Those who still will be unable manage pain without NSAIDs are advised to keep taking the drugs.
