Pregnancy Trends
A new special report on the latest medical technologies and major health issues related to pregnancy has been published by the not-for-profit National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC) and is available free online at healthywomen.org.
The National Women's Health Report: Women and Pregnancy is a special, 12- page issue that provides critical new information about important aspects of prenatal counseling and newer, less invasive tests that can help women better assess their risk of giving birth to a child with serious problems.
"Technology is playing a greater role than ever for women who are planning to become pregnant and who are pregnant," said Elizabeth Battaglino Cahill, RN, and executive director of NWHRC. "It's important for women to know the latest information about the medical technologies used in pregnancy and the options they have for their health care."
The report provides a comprehensive review of several important issues that range from pre-conception planning through breastfeeding and also examines the benefits and risks of medical technology featuring interviews with top medical experts. Areas covered include the benefits of planning for pregnancy earlier, genetic counseling and a new form of in-vitro fertilization for couples who carry genes for certain genetic disorders.
Three special sections of the Health Report focus on male infertility, gestational diabetes and breastfeeding. The Health Report highlights often overlooked pregnancy-related issues including the fact that male infertility accounts for half of infertility problems; half of all women with gestational diabetes will later develop Type 2 diabetes; and that many women underestimate the demands of breastfeeding - a behavior that must be learned by both mother and infant.
